Some details are for emergencies only, not for anyone curious who happens to scan your card. A PIN locks the medical sections of your emergency page.
What the PIN protects
- With a PIN set, your emergency page first shows only your name, your photo and your emergency contacts. A responder can still call them.
- Allergies, conditions, medications, medical details, doctor information, notes and health log entries stay locked until the PIN is entered.
- Sections you have switched off in Privacy are hidden outright. The PIN does not reveal them.
Set, change or remove it
- Open the Medical ID app and sign in.
- Open Settings, then Security, then Change PIN.
- Enter 4 to 6 digits and tap Save PIN.
To change the PIN, enter a new one in the same place and tap Update PIN. To remove it, tap Clear PIN. Without a PIN, every section you left visible is public.
Easy PINs are refused
The app will not accept a PIN that is easy to guess: the same digit repeated, a run like 1234 or 9876, a pattern like 1212, common codes such as 2580, or anything made from your date of birth.
Guessing is blocked
- After 3 wrong attempts from one phone, that phone must wait 15 minutes.
- If wrong attempts keep coming from different phones, every further try has to wait longer, up to an hour.
- After 20 wrong attempts in a day, we email you.
- Changing or clearing your PIN ends all waits at once.
Who should know your PIN?
- Give it only to people you trust: family, carers, close friends.
- If you think the wrong person knows it, change it. The old PIN stops working immediately.
Not the same as the Backup PIN
Settings, then Security also has a Backup PIN. That one unlocks the app on your own phone when Face ID or fingerprint does not work. It is separate from the page PIN and is never used on your emergency page.
